Three fully functional HYSPLIT executables, each with a different chemistry module are provided here for testing and evaluation. Two modules are for ozone formation (IER and GRS) and one module computes the conversion of sulfur dioxide to sulfate. Meteorological, emissions, and all required input files are provided in each module directory. The example can be run by simply executing the "run_model" batch file. Different meteorological data can be downloaded if other simulations are required. No technical support is available.

The examples were run on a 1.6 GHz Pentium-IV with 256 Mb of memory. The model was configured for a limited domain over the northeast U.S. for the period of June 24 through June 26, 2003. Pollutant particles were emitted for one time step each hour over about 5000 grid points, resulting in about 350,000 particles being tracked after 72 hours simulation. The PC simulation times are shown below and the results indicate that the CPU time depends more on the number of particles tracked than the complexity of the chemistry.

  • IER module - 66 min
  • GRS module - 72 min
  • SO2 module - 62 min

Note that running these examples requires no additional code; everything is self-contained. However, modification of the input files or running with different data requires substantial familiarity with the standard HYSPLIT PC installation and operating procedures. The output files from the chemistry simulations are compatible with all HYSPLIT postprocessing programs.
