Tuesday, March 26, 2024 DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY THROUGH 0100Z March 27, 2024 SMOKE: Central Plains… Widespread agricultural burning activity across Oklahoma and far north Texas has led to the production of numerous light to moderate density smoke emissions this afternoon. The majority of the smoke was seen moving southward to southeastward. AEROSOL/SMOKE: Northern South America/Central America/Western Caribbean/Western Cuba/Yucatan/Eastern Mexico/Bay of Campeche/Gulf of Mexico/Eastern CONUS… An expansive area of mixed aerosol, comprised of mainly smoke from agricultural burning throughout Mexico and Central America with some aerosol from gas flaring in the Bay of Campeche and perhaps pollution from industrial sources and a tiny amount of dust, was seen blanketing an area including northern South America, Central America, the Gulf of Mexico, the entirety of the Gulf Coast, the western Caribbean, and the eastern CONUS. This aerosol layer is being drawn northward from South America across Central America, the Yucatan, and the western Caribbean while also being drawn northeastward from central and southern Mexico across the Bay of Campeche and the Gulf of Mexico. These two merge over the northeastern Gulf of Mexico, where a frontal system continues to draw the combined layer northward while the front slowly moves eastward. BLOWING DUST: Southern California… A small amount of light blowing dust was observed emanating from Rosamond and Rogers Dry Lake Beds near Edwards AFB north of Los Angeles.
