Overview

The HYSPLIT dispersion model has been configured to run within (inline) the WRF/ARW mesoscale meteorological model. Details on the Inline WRF/HYSPLIT model can be found at https://www.arl.noaa.gov/hysplit/inline-wrf-hysplit-coupling/. Currently, the the system is designed to create and run with 4 domains (6 hour spin-up) that are then available to run HYSPLIT offline, if needed:

  • d01: CONUS domain at 27 km with 6 hours of forecast data
  • d02: Regional domain at 9 km with 6 hours of forecast data
  • d03: User domain at 3 km with 6 hours of forecast data
  • d04: User domain at 1 km with 6 hours of forecast data - HYSPLIT is run on this domain

For boundary conditions, WRF uses the AWRF archive (27 km) for 1980 to the end of the last year and the NARR data from the Research Data Archive at NCAR/UCAR (http://rda.ucar.edu) for the current year up to the end of the last month. Current forecasts can be produced for the last 9 days from the current day using the GFS forecast model for boundary conditions.
